About the event

Dear Friends,

The relationship between the Netherlands and the United States is one deeply rooted in

the young history of the U.S. On November 16, 1776, the Andrew Doria, a small

American warship, sailed into the harbor of the Dutch colonized West Indies Island of

St. Eustatius. The island’s governor ordered the cannons at the fort be fired in a friendly

salute - the first salute ever given by a foreign power to the flag of the United States.
